Baby and Children’s Health

Standards for safe pesticide use in foods have been based on adult tolerance levels. When selecting foods to feed your baby and children it makes sense to avoid foods with pesticides, since babies and children are far more vulnerable to the toxic effects of pesticides because of their small size, high metabolisms, immature digestive and detoxification system.

“More than 1 million children between the ages of 1 and 5 ingest at least 15 pesticides every day from fruits and vegetables. More than 600,000 of these children eat a dose of organophosphate insecticides that the US federal government considers unsafe, and 61,000 eat doses that exceed benchmark levels by a factor of 10 or more.”

Is organic food more nutritious?

Common sense tells us it is. Eating food without chemicals, pesticides and GE products used in harvesting and production must be better, however there has been billions of dollars spent on studies designed to answer this question. Here are some of those studies and their findings.

Researchers at Rutgers University in the USA, analysed the mineral content of a selection of produce conventional produce sold from a major supermarket and then purchased the same products but grown organically from a health food shop and carried out the same tests.

The results speak for themselves! For example compare the amount of iron in the organic tomatoes and spinach to the non-organic varieties. Many other essential trace elements are absent in the non-organic foods whereas they occur in abundance in the organic varieties…

Understanding the effects Pesticide Exposure: The absence of knowledge is not proof of safety.

The more that scientists learn about the toxicity of pesticides, the more questions are raised about the potential toxic effects on people. Pesticide manufacturers often dismiss these unresolved scientific issues using statements similar to, “there is no conclusive evidence of harm to humans” which can mislead the public into believing that exposures to these pesticides and toxic chemicals are without appreciable risks.

This is not true. Absence of knowledge is not proof of safety.

There are two chief reasons why it is so difficult to link human harm conclusively to toxic chemicals.

Firstly, most safety tests done for regulatory agencies are not designed to discover whether the low dose exposures to pesticide and chemical mixtures that we all experience are safe, particularly during critical periods of development. In general, the government demands, and companies conduct, high dose studies designed to find gross, obvious toxic effects. In the absence of the appropriate tests at lower doses, pesticide and chemical manufacturers claim safety because no harm at low doses has been conclusively demonstrated (or even studied)….
